American Studies Charity Act 2025: Supporting Retired Indonesian Migrant Workers’ Health with Medical Outreachers & Yayasan TCKN

Yogyakarta, 6th August 2025 — The American Studies program at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) successfully completed a community service project that focused on the welfare of retired Indonesian migrant workers. Yayasan Taman Cipta Karya Nusantara, a foundation that actively supports former Indonesian migrant workers across various regions, and Medical Outreachers Hong Kong, a student-led medical organization committed to global health assistance, collaborated to organize this charity act. The initiative was created in direct response to returning migrant workers’ pressing need for easily available healthcare services, as many of them have long-term health issues following years of working overseas.

Comprehensive medical examinations, such as blood pressure checks, blood glucose tests, general health screenings, and basic consultations, were the main focus of the event. To guarantee that retired migrant workers may obtain necessary health evaluations without financial hardship, these services were offered at no cost. In order to perform examinations with expertise and compassion, Medical Outreachers Hong Kong sent out a team of qualified medical students who collaborated with local volunteers.

Participants thanked the project, pointing out that it addressed health issues that are frequently disregarded because of lack of access to traditional healthcare facilities or financial constraints. Many of the recipients reported that they rarely receive medical care after returning home from years of work overseas.

Community involvement is a crucial component of the department’s goal to develop socially conscious scholars, according to representatives from the American Studies program. Students and professors are encouraged to enhance their perspectives on global mobility, inequality, and humanitarian obligations by participating in activities that connect academic knowledge with community needs. Additionally, this activity aligns well with the program’s multidisciplinary focus, which centers on topics such as labor, migration, and transnational connections.

The cooperation with Medical Outreachers Hong Kong demonstrated the value of global alliances in tackling humanitarian issues. Their participation improved connections between Indonesian institutions and international youth organizations dedicated to social welfare in addition to offering medical skills. In the meantime, Yayasan Taman Cipta Karya Nusantara was instrumental in organizing participants, determining beneficiaries, and guaranteeing the seamless execution of logistical arrangements.

The initiative’s success demonstrates a common dedication to uplifting communities that are frequently overlooked in public health agendas. The American Studies program hopes to extend similar initiatives in the future, engaging more former migrant workers and strengthening the resources available to them through ongoing partnerships and persistent outreach.

The 6 August 2025 community service activity stands as a testament to the value of academic involvement in humanitarian action demonstrating how education, compassion, and collaboration can create impactful change for those who have contributed significantly to Indonesia’s global workforce.
