Seminar on American Literary Culture

03 October, 2017: Seminar on American Literary Culture Co-organize by Department of English Language & Literature Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences – IIUM and Intercultural Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences Universitas Gadjah Mada

A half-day Seminar on American Literary Culture was co-organized by Department of English Language and Literature, Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Intercultural Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada on Tuesday, 3rd October, 2107. The Seminar was organized in conjunction with a road show by the Intercultural Department FCS-UGM. Among the objectives of the roadshow is to explore future cooperation between UGM and IIUM in the field of research, teaching and students exchange. The delegation from FCS-UGM consisted of 13 post-graduate students from the American Culture Studies and accompanied by two lecturers headed by Dr. Nur Saktiningrum, M.Hum. Vice Dean of Academic and Student Affairs, Faculty of Cultural Sciences – UGM.

Eight papers were presented in the seminar:

Paper 5: The Mythology of American Exceptionalism in the 21st Century, A Critical Discourse Analysis of President Barack Obama’s Inaugural Addresses by Simon Ntamwana – UGM
Paper 6: Ambivalent Identities and Liminal spaces: Reconfiguration of National and Diasporic Identity in Mohsin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Quratulain Shirazi – IIUM
Paper 7: Desiring Domination: A Postfeminist Study on the Lyrics of Lana del Rey’s Ultraviolence Album by Galant Nanta Adhitya and Nadia Lasari – UGM
Paper 8: Promoting Islamic Teachings through Literature: A Study of Emerick’s Work by Nur Hafiza binti Abu Bakar – IIUM

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Abdul Quayum the Dean of Kulliyyah of Islamic Revealed Knowledge and Human Sciences – IIUM warmly welcomed the delegation from FCS-UGM and he hoped future collaboration can be materialized as the result of the seminar and visit. Dr. Nur Saktiningrum, M.Hum the Vice Dean of Academic and Student Affairs, Faculty of Cultural Sciences – UGM thanked KIRKHS-IIUM for the reception and she also looked forward for future programs and activities between the two Universities.
